José Loureiro discovered painting at the age of sixteen, studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, and began exhibiting in the late 1980s. His initially expressive style, with almost surrealist overtones, soon evolved toward greater simplicity. The year 1993 marked a decisive shift toward abstraction, centered on an exploration of grids and patterns—a line of inquiry that continues to inform his work: the mechanics of gesture, shifts in scale, the synthesis of movement, and the autonomy of color. Combining rigor and playfulness, Loureiro moves along the borders of abstraction and figuration, making color vibrate at the heart of his practice. (Keren Detton, Director of Frac Grand Large)
